San Diego Weekend Getaway: Coronado Island
When we needed a quick escape from Colorado’s cold, San Diego was the perfect spot — specifically Coronado Island. We traveled at New Year’s for a relaxed family trip, and it was exactly the kind of peaceful reset we were hoping for.
We chose a bayside stay at the Coronado Island Marriott, a laid-back retreat with spacious rooms and big patios overlooking the water. The pool area was a highlight — calm, uncrowded, and complete with poolside service. We had stayed here a couple of years earlier for an adult-only trip.
One of our favorite parts of the trip was taking advantage of the complimentary bike rentals at the hotel. We pedaled along easy bike paths around the island toward the beach side — just under 2 miles to the iconic Hotel del Coronado. The ride was fun and easy, with ocean views and fun stops along the way. The Hotel del Coronado is stunning and worth a visit even if you don’t stay there — its history and beachfront setting are picture-perfect for a wander. Plenty of great places to eat nearby- we especially loved Miguel’s Cocina- beautiful patio seating and incredible food!

Of course you must plan to visit the San Diego zoo- just a short Uber ride away from Coronado. Another favorite is the San Diego Maritime museum– so many cool ships to visit. Also check out the Midway Museum- walk an aircraft carrier.

It’s super cheap and easy to take the ferry across the bay to get to downtown. Or if you are staying downtown, take it over to Coronado for the day.
